Occasions

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I feel that my media products use the forms and conventions of real media products the most. When doing research I looked closely at the way different adverts are formed, and what the all contained. They all seemed to have a comedy or fun element, which has been brought through in our advert by the way the same box of chocolates is given out by two people for different occasions. We have also gone with the conventions of the timing of our adverts, with them being at around 51 and 35 seconds each.

Although I believe we have developed and challenged the forms and conventions of chocolate adverts because we have advertised a different type of chocolate to what you see most on the TV, which is a box of chocolates, rather then a bar of chocolate. There is a gap in the market for boxes of chocolates that are aimed at any occasion. We decided that it would be fun and innovative to challenge these existing conventions and create a box of chocolates.

Our TV Sponsorship uses the forms and conventions as it uses footage and ideas from the TV Adverts, which from research I have found most TV Sponsorships do, also it is around the same timing as a real media product. We have also decided it to sponsor Pineapple Dance Studios, which is a TV program which is likely to be sponsored by a chocolate. Also this works well because a lot of teenagers and young adults watch this programme, which means our target audience will see this.

Our radio advert also uses the forms and conventions of a real media product as it has a voice over, background music and lasts around 25 seconds, which from research is what a radio advert consists of. We feel that we have started to develop and challenge the forms and conventions thought because chocolate isn’t something that is usually advertised on the radio, especially a box of chocolates. We have also decided to add in occasions that you wouldn’t normally give chocolates for as a comedy element, and to show how versatile our product is.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

I think that the combination of my main product and ancillary texts is really good. They all have clear links between them which is very important when marketing a product as you need to create maximum brand recognition for the product. Our two adverts both link together as they both share some of the footage from the birthday scene. They also both contain the same characters, which mean people will recognise them from each advert, providing continuity and familiarity for the audience.

We then also have our first ancillary product which is the TV Sponsorship; this again links with one of the TV adverts as it uses footage from the Valentines Day scene, these means people will be able to relate to the scene, characters and plot of them. There is also a jingle over this product, which is used at the end of the two adverts, this links them together as people will recognise the music.

The last part is the radio advert. This has the same idea to it as the adverts, with the chocolates been given for any occasion, and again it also contains the jingle in the background.

Overall I feel that all the products combine well together, and create good brand recognition for the product. They all have elements that intertwine with each other which means they can be clearly defined as a set of products, as opposed to 4 separate products. We have used different aspects to help with this, we have kept the same fonts and colours through all our products creating a brand style.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

I used different media technologies within the course. To begin with I used the internet to access YouTube and other websites to do research on different adverts. I am familiar with the internet which means this was easy for me and I managed to get this done without a problem.

Another website I have used a lot during the coursework is Blogger. This is the first time I used the website, but I quickly got used to using it. Over the times I have being doing my coursework I have been updating it regularly. I found it easy to edit and add text. Then I came to adding my scans to my blog. I was not sure what would be the best way to do this at first. I though about adding them as PDF files, or adding them as photos. I decided to embed them as photos, and this worked really well as they look neat on the blog, and they also open up bigger when clicked on so you can read them more clearly. I also decided to add the videos I looked at for research in my blog. At first I just added the links, but then I decided I wanted to extend my knowledge of Blogger and found out how to embed them into my blog, to make it easier to use. I did some research and found out how to do this, and I think it’s made my blog look nicer. The last addition I made to my blog was to add a poll, I really liked the idea of this as it will make my blog more interactive and fun.

I have really liked doing the blogging and the way all work has to be kept electronically this year as it is something I have not done before, and it not made me realise how effective blogging can be, as with work on paper, it usually just says what needs to be said for the work, but with blogging it gives you a chance to reflect on your work more and write about everything that has been happening.

After creating our work on paper, we needed to scan it onto the computer to include it in our blogs; to begin with we had trouble with this as the scanner used a program that was not available on all computers. This meant once we had scanned it in, we couldn’t access it on any other computer other then that certain computer. We tried to convert the files to something easier to use, but found this hard as the programs were not easy to get hold of. After this I decided I would scan them in at home which was a lot easier and give them to Jasmine and Attiya on memory stick so they also had access to them.

After this process, I then started using Video Cameras to record the footage for 3 of my products. We had used these devices before so I found them easy to use and work with which was a big help in getting the coursework done.

The next step was to edit the adverts, to do this we used iMovie on the Macs. Again, I have used this program before, so I found this was simple and effective to use, although it had been a while so I had to refresh my mind on some of the ways to use it. One of the main problems we had with this was that the first time we filmed we didn’t leave enough time at the end and beginning of each clip to edit them together well. We learned from this and then filmed again and made sure we left a few seconds at the beginning and end of each clip. This made it a lot easier to edit the second time.

I feel over this piece of coursework I gained a better knowledge of all of these technologies that will help me in the future.

What have you learned from audience feedback?

We have asked our target market of our product to look at our set of products. We then asked them a series of different questions to see what they though about our products. Everyone recognised that the set of products are for a box of chocolates, and they all understood the message of one box of chocolates being given out for different occasions. Everyone said that our products look good, and work well as a set as they all link together in various ways.

With our radio advert we got creative criticism saying that it was a bit short compared to normal radio advert. We agreed with this and we decided to add in more “occasions” to make the advert longer, we also felt this would give it more impact as it shows the chocolates can be given for more than just the four occasions that are used on the other products. After this we got feedback on it again, and people said it was more like a proper radio advert.

From this we also noticed we have two different audiences. First of all there are the people who will watch and see our adverts, who will buy our product, but then there is also our secondary audience who will find out about the product through our main target audience. Also we have two different sets of viewers/ listeners for our products. As people who listen to the radio don’t always watch a lot of TV.

Also one person noticed the part where I am stood in the mirror. We were unsure about whether to add this part to our adverts or not, but we decided it was not too noticeable, and also it was only a short clip which we thought added well to the advert. Seeing as only one person noticed this we have decided to keep it. Although on reflection if we were to do it again we would make sure this wouldn’t happen by doing a test show first.

After all the products were finished, I decided to use the poll feature on blogger as a form of feedback. I think this is a really good way to get feedback as it is done privatly so it creates honset feedback. This has created really positive feedback.

28th April

All my products are now completed and burnt onto disk! I have also completed my evaluation and this will be uploaded in the next blog post.

Overall I think I have learnt a lot over the time I have been creating this piece of coursework and have found it a really fun experience. Although if I were to do it again, there would be various aspects that I would change. First of all I have realised the importance of storyboards. When we first created them we had an idea in our head about what the advert would look like, and created our story boards from this, but I have realised that story boards need to be a lot more details, and contain different shots.

Secondly I would have made sure that test shots were conducted, this would of got rid of the problem with me standing in the mirror, which is something I would definitely get rid of if I was to create the products again.

I would also of done the filming earlier on in the project, this means we would have had more time to sort out our problems after this time. For example we may of had the time to re-record the parts where I am standing in the mirror if we had starting recording a month earlier.

I feel that we worked well as a team as we all did different parts and put effort in. We did a lot of research together, as well as doing our own. Such as I looked through adverts by myself and analysed these, and I also looked at the compliance report. I edited the two adverts myself, then Jasmine and Attiya created the TV Sponsorship together. With us all completing the radio advert as a group.

I think doing this project has extended my knowledge a lot, and I feel I would be comfortable doing the project again, and I feel I could make it even better if I was to.

I have decided to get further feedback now my products have all been completed and I have created a poll on my blog. I have shown all the products to people, and then asked them to come onto my blog and complete the poll. I think this is a good form of feedback as it means people can do it in private so they can give their true belief on how good they think the products are. As well as this I also think it will be a fun edition to my blog, which a lot of people don't take advantage, which is a shame as its a good effective addition to a blog.

21st April

Today we had some audience feedback. We asked people who are in our target market to look at all the products and tell us what they think.

We got alot of positive feedback, everybody said that all our products link well together, and they can all be recognised as a set of products. They also said that they look like real products. Also everybody recongised we are advertising a chocolate product, which was the most important thing!

Although, we did get some critisism. Quite a few people said that our radio advert was too short, from this we decided to make it a bit longer by adding in more occasions. This was done today as a group.

Another thing was one person noticed the part where I was in the mirror. We were unsure about whether to add this part to our adverts or not, but we decided it wasn’t too noticeable, and also it was only a short clip which we thought added well to the advert. Seen as only one person noticed this we have decided to keep it. Although if we were to do it again we would make sure this wouldn’t happen.

Overall I am really happy with the end products, and I feel they are effective and look professional. From the time we started planning, we have changed our ideas alot, but I believe this has been for the best, as our products just kept getting better and better. Our products aren't exactally how our planning said they would be, this is especially true for the storyboards. When we were shooting the adverts we had the storyboards with us and kept to them, but as we were putting them into practice we felt that they wern't long enough and we needed to add more so we also recorded extra shots we thought would improve it. When editing we found these clips were useful and we were very glad we decided to do this.

I am now going to start my evaluation ready to be given in tomorrow. I am thinking about what type of media to use to present my evaluation. At the moment I am thinking of either creating a Prezi or recording myself.

19th April

On Friday Jasmine and Attiya created the TV Sponsorship, they did this by using the footage we have used in the TV Adverts. We have done this because it means it will link in well with our adverts and people will automatically know its for Occasions Chocolates. They also created a jingle for it which is quite romantic sounding, which goes well with the TV Sponsorship. Today I have looked at this and I think it is really good, I took the jingle from the TV Sponsorship and added it onto the TV adverts over the part where there is writing.

We have now also created our radio advert, which we did using a programme called Garage Band. We initially thought that we would use the so
und from one of our adverts, and slightly change it to create our radio advert, as again this would mean it links in with everything, and again it means people would recognize it straight away. The problem we came across with this is that we couldn't find a way for IMovie to allow us to do this, after a lot of research into it and no outcome we decided to use a different idea, which we personally think is just as good. We stayed after school today to make sure it would be quiet in the media room. We have used the idea "Merry Christmas, Happy Birthday, Happy Valentines Day, Happy Mothers Day, Any Occasion, Any Message, It's Occasional". We have chosen this as it is a bit different to our adverts, but still links in well. We have also added the same jingle to our radio advert.

This print screen shows us in the process of creating our radio advert, it shows the input from microphone, and also where our jingle has been put in.

Our next step is to get some audience feedback, we will then amend our work to any comments and burn everything to disk to hand in to the teacher as soon as possible. I am now going to create my evaluation, which I have already started answering, but I need to present it in a electronical way.

15th April

Today we came into school and put our footage onto the macs, this took us a bit longer then we thought as we put it onto one mac, which then was needed by somebody else. This meant we had to put the footage onto another mac, but somebody had taken our camera out to do some filming, and the mac shared areas wouldn't work properly, as it kept crashing imovie, but we sorted this out in the end. I spent time editing both of the adverts that we have now produced, I kept showing them to Jasmine and Attiya at different stages to make sure they thought it was okay, and for any pointers from then.

The one problem we had with this set of footage is that at some points, where somebody else is filming the characters walking through the door, you can see me in the mirror filming from a different angle, at the time we didn't realise this was happening, and we dont have time to film it again to aviod this, so we tried to used the least of these parts as we could. You can see this in the show below. Another problem is the lighting changes abit, especially in the birthday advert, in the second shot.
Overall, I am very happy with the editing of the two adverts I have done today, w
hich now leaves Attiya to create the radio advert, and Jasmine to create the TV sponsership sequence tomorrow. I found iMovie a good program to used, and I used lots of different features this program has such as cropping clips, adjusting the sou
nd on certain clips and also adding a text and jingle over part of the advert. You can see this from the print screen below.

9th April

We have now filmed again, this time at Attiyas house. We spent the morning filming, and made sure we filmed it well so we don't have to do it again. We found this alot better then filming at school, as we had more control over the lighting, and background sound, which was another problem we found at school.

We took lots of different shots so we have a choice when we are editing at a later date in the holiday.

We decided not to include the Christmas scene in our work, as we had originally planned. This is because the first time we filmed it in school the lighting wasn't very good, so we don't want to use this bit of footage, as it isn't as good as the rest of the advert and we feel it will let it down. We were going to film the Christmas scene at Attiyas house with the rest of them, but there was a lack of props at her house to make this scene look good, so we decided to leave it out. We think that we have enough footage from the rest of our advert to make it a good length and effective without this part.

While we were filming we found that we didn't quite keep to our storyboards, we had them with us when we were filming, and used them as a reference, but we thought it was necessary to add extra shots in order to make it flow better and for the final product to look better.

Now we have got this done, we just need to spend time editing it, and create our other two products, which shouldn't be too hard now all the filming is out of the way.

Thursday, 18 March 2010

18th March

Over the last few weeks we have managed to do some filming, but we decided to do it in school, as we were having trouble finding time when we could all do it at the places we had decided on. Also Stefan found it hard to be able to agree with the times that were suitable for us, so we changed the role of the chocolate giver to Attiya.

From our first piece of filming we have found it hard to piece together, and it doesnt flow well. This is because we haven't filmed for a while, so we needed to familiarize our selfs with the concepts again, such as leaving a good amount at the start and end of clips, so the don't all start suddenly with the character talking. This means we will have to film this part again, to make sure it all flows. Also next time we film we need to make sure the lighting is better then previously. Next time we are going to make sure that we film at a different location.

Thursday, 14 January 2010

14th Jan

Today we decided what sort of props we need, and where we are going to film. We have decided Stefan is going to be the main "chocolate giver". We will use his house to film the the mothers day scene, as his mum will be able to be in the film, and the christmas scene as he also has the props we need such as Christmas decorations.

We will then use my house for the birthday scene, as it was my birthday not so long ago and I still have some decorations, and I Ben will play the part of the Birthday Boy.

Then the last scene which is valentines day will be filmed at Attiya's house, and Jasmine will recieve the chocolates.

We have also created the box of chocolates that we will use in our adverts. We decided to use the colours red and gold as they are luxioury colours, and these colours aren't already used by a major brand. We feel these combination of colours will enhance our product. I got the box from a box of chocolates I had for Christmas, and got the tissue paper and bow from my mum, then used them all to create Occasions Chocolates.

This will be done over the next few weeks, so we have plenty of time to edit our adverts.

Thursday, 7 January 2010

7th Jan

Today we thought about our other ancillary task, which is to create a TV sponsership sequence. We decided this would be a really good task to do, as other chocolate companys do sponser TV programs. Such as Cadburys used to sponser Corronation Street, which again included the glass and a half full symbol which they used in all there marketing, but this program is now sponsered by Harveys. Others include Tombola Bingo sponsering Emmerdale and Desperate Housewives being sponsered by Herbal Essences.

We did research by looking at different sponsership sequences and we found that they all contain elements of the orginal advert, and all last around 40 seconds. This had led us to decide that we need to contain elements of our main adverts within our sponsership sequence. We had various ideas such as using stop motion, which is inspired by the innocent smoothies adverts, to mixing our advert up to make it a bit more silly.

Thursday, 10 December 2009

10th December

Today we have starting thinking about which ancillary tasks we are going to complete.

First of all we had a discussion about which tasks we should complete. We decided not to create a web pop up as we didn't think this would be effective for our product. From asking peers we found a lot of people don't look at web pop ups, they just close them, therefore it wouldn't market our product in the way the pervious two ancillary tasks do.

We started thinking of ideas for radio adverts which we could use, we came up with:

Idea 1

"Merry Christmas, Happy Birthday, Happy Valentines Day, Happy Mothers Day, Any Occasion, Any Message, It's Occasional"

Idea 2

Use the audio and music from the TV advert as the radio advert.

Idea 3

Using "seductive voices"

These are just some of the ideas we have come up with, but we most like the idea of 1 or 2, as they are keeping with the idea of the adverts, while idea 3 is a different style to our other products, and this would put us at a disadvantage as all our products wont fit together, to create maximum brand recognition.

After doing some research I have discovered certain things about radio adverts. They are usually around 20 - 40 seconds, some can be quite a lot longer, which can be due to different lengths of adverts costing different prices, if we were to bring out this new chocolate, we would probably have to go for a advert nearer the 20 second mark, as our first marketing campaign would be on a budget. Lots of different radio stations have adverts, such as Galaxy, Heart FM etc, but they are all smaller stations, which target certain places, such as both of these stations and a channel for the West Midlands. Other radio stations such as Radio 1 don't have adverts on their stations.

I listened to different radio adverts, and if they have adverts, they both link in very well. A good example of this is the "We buy any car" advert. The advert and the radio advert both have a very catchy song in, which makes you know what business it is for straight away.
This is an example of the advert:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-yEWZTBQ64&feature=related
I tried to find an example of the radio advert to go with it, but could not find on one the internet.

Thursday, 3 December 2009

3rd December

We have now decided on our final ideas for our adverts. These adverts are:

Advert 1 - This advert is where one person gives the box of chocolates as a birthday present. They then go to answer the door and when they come back the chocolates are on the table.

Advert 2 - This advert is where one person gives the box of chocolates to different people for different occasions. This shows the chocolates are versatile and can be used for a number of different occasions.

The adverts will link together as the second advert will have some of the same shots as the first advert. They will also have the same piece of music in the adverts which we will create. As a group we decided this would be a vibrant cheerful piece of music.

We have created storyboards and an analysis for these adverts which are below. I drew out the storyboard with Jasmine and Attiyas help with the ideas. Creating the storyboards helped us think about different things such as lighting, setting, camera shots and timing. We also had to decided where was appropriate to film each part of the adverts, and where would make it look most authentic.

Advert 1

Advert 2

After completing out storyboard it helped us to complete an analysis of our advert -

Thursday, 26 November 2009

27th November

We have now come up with 3 ideas for our adverts. These are:

We decided on these ideas as a group, with lots of discussion. The first idea we came up with as a group, after seeing the innocent smoothie advert as we thought this advert was very effective and eye-catching. Jasmine and Attiya came up with idea 2, and I came up with idea 3.

After this I did further research, I looked at different websites about advertising. The website I found particularly interesting was http://www.asa.org.uk/asa/codes/tv_code/tv_codes/Section+2+-+Programmes+and+Advertising.htm.

I found this had alot of information we need to take into consideration when making TV adverts and what rules we need to think about. I looked at the information and found that all our advert ideas comply with these regulations when it comes to advertising food on the TV. This makes our advert more realistic, as it means it would be able to shown on TV.

Thursday, 19 November 2009

19th November

Today me, Jasmine and Attiya spent time together on the computer looking at different chocolate adverts and other food/drink related adverts which we could use ideas from to apply to chocolate. We did this to help us understand the conventions of adverts, especially chocolate adverts, and so we can see what sort of style/format they have.

One of the first things we noticed is that adverts change alot over time, but although they change alot, they always seem to have elements in today's adverts that haven't changed from them, for example the glass and a half of milk symbol is always in the Cadburys adverts, and always has been for many years. They do this so people recognise the brand, and they build up a customer knowledge of that element.

We looked at alot of different types of chocolate, and analysed each advert in a group, here are some of the adverts that we looked at in detail:

Cadburys

Cadburys chocolate is aimed at a wide range of people, with their vast product range. This advert is of a gorilla playing the drums to Phill Collins, this advert is quirky and very different to alot of chocolate adverts. It finishes with the glass and a half full milk symbol, which is associated with Cadburys.

Galaxy

In this advert a women looks in the fridge for chocolate, but then finds out her friends have eaten it, so she gets out one that she hid for herself. This advert shows it to be a very tempting chocolate, with low lighting and soft music. This advert lasts for 30 seconds.

Milkyway

Milkyway advertise their chocolate to the younger audience using the "Milkybar Kid". This advert is a remake of an advert that was used around 20 years ago, using two cars and the milkybar kid. Its a very bright and fast paced advert using a catchy song, which all appeals to children. This advert lasts for 32 seconds.

Kit Kat

This advert contains a man re-enacting a checkout with his head. Its a bright advert that is aimed at mainly lower/middle class. It has a big comedy element and is intended to make the watcher laugh. Its slogan is "Working like a machine ... have a break, have a Kit Kat" and it lasts for 40 seconds.

Lindt

This advert shows the coco beans that are used to make there chocolate, which looks luxurious, they then used a strong male voice for a voice over. They use music that also sounds very luxurious to complete the advert. This is aimed at adults, mainly upper class. The advert lasts for 20 seconds.

From doing this research we have found clear lines between different ways of marketing chocolate at different ages and social classes. We also noticed that almost all chocolate adverts have a comdey element, or they are a bit silly, this reflects the idea of chocolate, which is a bit silly, as it's not a food that you need, its something you want to snack on. This leads us to think we need a comedy element in our advert.

Another thing we noticed is that boxes of chocolates such as Roses, Celebrations etc, dont have adverts on TV as much as chocolate bars. This means our advert will be different from the normal chocolate advert, as we are marketing a box of chocolates, not a bar.

As our chocolate is going to be for the young adult we have decided our advert will probably be more along the lines of the Kit Kat or Galaxy adverts.

Aswell as this, we also did some work on paper when looking into adverts, this is the research I did:

And this is the research Attiya did:

Thursday, 12 November 2009

12th November 2009

Today we started doing our coursework, as we had already started looking at the briefs in our group, which is me, Jasmine Dale and Attiya Jamil, before the holiday we knew we are going to do brief 3. We have choose this task we believe it will be challenging and fun, also it is different to our task last year, which as producing a film opening. This gives us a chance to experiance different aspects to media and broaden our skills and knowledge.

We have decided we are going to market a new chocolate product. In these two lessons we did some brain storming about what sort of items we could create, colours, price and what the audience we would aim, from this we decided we will create a survey to help us with research so we can make sure that our product is aimed at the right customer.

These are some of our draft work for our initial ideas:
